Why Would I Need Coaching?

...Well, I'm so glad you asked!

“Coaching is unlocking a person’s potential to maximize their growth.” - John Whitmore

Serious question for you…

Would you ever advise a competitive athlete to try to achieve their goals or make technical changes without a coach? I’m assuming your answer to this question is not just “No,” but “ABSOLUTELY NOT! That would be silly!”

Here’s the thing…

We all recognize and acknowledge how important, and necessary, a coach is in an athlete’s career and their ability to reach their goals, right? In fact, I would argue that 99%+ elite athletes have a coach – I personally don’t know of any who don’t.

Do you see where I’m going here?

We non-athletes are the exact same as athletes when it comes to coaching…WE ALL NEED COACHING! The crazy truth is that I had a coach my entire athletic career, yet once I transitioned into the real world following my career, I figured I didn’t need one anymore. I figured I had learned everything about how to accomplish goals and rise to the top in my first 30 years of life. WRONG!

That voice telling me that I didn’t need a coach was my ego. Egos are funny little (or big) things…

“Our ego makes us susceptible to manipulation; it narrows our field of vision; and it corrupts our behavior, often causing us to act against our values. Our ego is like a target we carry with us. And like any target, the bigger it is, the more vulnerable it is to being hit.” - Rasmus Hougaard and Jacqueline Carter (Harvard Business Review)

It took me about 10 years following my athletic career to get my ego in check and realize that NO ONE is meant to do life alone. And, I don't mean "alone" like without a spouse, partner, family or friends. I'm referring to not doing life alone by stressing the importance of getting coaching for the following reasons (just to name a few):

  • Setting goals/intentions and being held accountable.
  • Navigating life transitions.
  • Gaining clarity on your direction and decisions.
  • Overcoming stress in a healthy manner.
  • Managing your time more effectively.
  • Finding balance in chaos.
  • Defining success and purpose and making sure they align.
  • Increasing productivity.
  • Living a healthier life physically, mentally and emotionally.
  • Unlocking your hidden potential.
  • Increasing confidence.
  • Increasing self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Y’all, this is just a short list. I could go on and on about why we should all get coaching and how coaching can help us achieve more and experience exponential growth in our lives. Just like athletes, we were not meant to go about life on our own and wonder aimlessly for the truth. And, our spouses, partners, friends, families and even bosses are not responsible for coaching us the way we are supposed to be coached to reach our full potential.

So, what do you say? Are you ready to put your ego aside and take the leap? Don’t wait another day, minute or even second wondering if it’s time to make the commitment.

The best time to start was yesterday. The next best time in NOW!

In pursuit of the personal growth,
